FOOD LABELS

Many of the ingredients on food labels can look extremely foreign and confusing. Let's explore two possible reasons why this may be; and, let's familiarize ourselves with the alternative names that a food additive may go by.

One of the reasons why a lot of us may get confused when reading the labels on food is that the usual, everday names of ingredients or additives are listed under one of their alternative names.

Is the Confusion Intentional ?

Secondly, our being confused may very well be the intention. It's no secret that there are many additives going into prepared foods that can be harmful for us. Listing an additive under a name we many not recognize or that may sound less harmful would make the ingredient list look so much more acceptable.

A Substance By Any Other Name ... Is Still the Same Substance

Below is a list of many of the substances we discuss on our site. With each, we list many of the alternative names they can go by. With the applicable substances we also give you the name of the the biproduct they can break down into.

Aspartame

Is scientifically known as 1-aspartyl 1-phenylalanine methyl ester. It can also be called: NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, Benevia, NutraTaste, E951, or Canderel.

Watch food labels for names like:

amino acid, isolates, phenylalanine (this decomposes into diketopiperazine, a known carcinogen, 'cancer-causing', agent), aspartic acid, wood alcohol, methanol (this breaks down into formaldehyde, embalming fluid). [7.c]Pick [13.a]Wikipedia-Aspartame [13.b]HealthHouse

Cylamate

Also called Sweet'N Low, Sugar Twin, Assugrin, Sucaryl, cyclamate is the sodium or calcium salt of cyclamic acid.

Watch food labels for names like:

cyclamic acid, cyclohexylamine, sodium cyclamate, sodium cyclohexane, Hachi-sugar, monosodium salt, and many, many other names at: [13.c]EnvironmentalChemistry

Splenda

Splenda is sucralose. Sucralose is made by chlorinating sugar. Three of the hydroxyl(OH) groups in sugar are replaced with chlorine atoms.

Watch food labels for names like:

Saccharin

Also known as Sweet'N Low, it is sometimes referred to as benzosulfamide. The original start route for making saccharin was toluene which is methylbenzene or phenylmethane (a clear liquid that smells similar to paint thinner).

Watch food labels for names like:

Neotame

Neotame is a dipeptide methyl ester and is chemically similar to aspartame. It is made by NutraSweet.

Watch for names like:

L-phenylalanine, methyl ester, methanol (breaks down into formaldehyde), amino acid groups, aspartic acid, dimethylbutylamino. [13.j]HolisticMed

Sugar Alcohols

Also called polyols, sugar alcohols are hydrogenated forms of carbohydrates.

Watch for names like:

hydrogenated starch hydrolysates, isomalt, lactitol, maltitol, maltitol syrup, mannitol, sorbitol, sorbitol syrup, xylitol, polyalcohol, polyhydric alcohol, ethyl maltol. [13.k]Wikipedia-SugarAlcohol

S U G A R

Sugar, referred to as sucrose, when it is a basic food carbohydrate primarily comes from sugar cane and sugar beet, but is also found in fruit, honey, sorghum, sugar maple, and in many other sources. Manufacturing and preparing food often involve these many other types of sugars. Any word that ends with "-ose" will likely be a sugar. [13.o]Wikipedia-Sugar

Knowing what we are reading on food labels and avoiding the harmful substances, can mean the difference between a "well, happy life", and an "ill, depressed existance."
